West Greenwich has been named one of the best neighbourhoods to live in London, and it is easy to see why.

Property consultancy Simply London ranked West Greenwich fourth in its list of the capital’s best places to live in 2026.

The company described it as a "riverside gem with village charm," praising its weekend markets, independent shops, and riverside pubs while highlighting how close it is to central London.

The area manages to combine leafy streets and historic buildings with excellent transport links, green spaces, and plenty to do, making it feel more like a village than part of one of the world's busiest cities.

So here are five reasons why West Greenwich deserves its place among London's best neighbourhoods.

Greenwich Park is essentially on your doorstep

One of West Greenwich's biggest advantages is having one of London's great green spaces right on the doorstep.

Greenwich Park covers 183 acres and is home to ancient trees, woodland, gardens, wildlife, and a herd of deer.

The park also sits on a hill, giving visitors spectacular views across London towards the City.

At the top is the Royal Observatory, where visitors can stand on the Prime Meridian and look out across the capital.

For residents, it means having a huge amount of open space within walking distance, whether you want to go for a run, walk the dog, have a picnic, or simply escape the busy streets of London.

Village feel

West Greenwich manages to feel surprisingly removed from the bustle of the capital.

The area has attractive Victorian and Georgian homes, tree-lined streets, and quiet residential roads, with the Ashburnham Triangle conservation area adding to its character.

The historic centre of Greenwich also gives the neighbourhood a distinctly local atmosphere, with independent businesses, cafés, and pubs creating something closer to a village centre than a typical London high street.

That village atmosphere is one of the reasons Simply London singled out West Greenwich, despite its location firmly within the capital.

It means residents can enjoy a quieter pace of life without actually having to leave London.

World-class culture is right on the doorstep

West Greenwich residents do not need to travel into central London to get their fill of history and culture.

The National Maritime Museum, Queen's House, Royal Observatory, and Cutty Sark are all clustered around Greenwich's historic centre.

The National Maritime Museum is free to enter, while Greenwich Park is home to the Royal Observatory and the Prime Meridian.

The area is also part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, giving residents an extraordinary amount of history within walking distance.

For a neighbourhood with a village-like feel, the amount of culture packed into the surrounding area is pretty remarkable.

Connectivity

The leafy atmosphere does not mean West Greenwich residents are cut off from the rest of London.

Greenwich station provides National Rail services towards destinations including London Bridge, Blackfriars, and Cannon Street, while Cutty Sark DLR station provides connections across east and south-east London.

The DLR also makes it straightforward to reach Canary Wharf and the city, making the area particularly useful for commuters.

Greenwich can also be reached from central London in around 20 minutes, according to Simply London.

So while West Greenwich can feel peaceful and residential, the capital's major employment and entertainment centres are never particularly far away.

Markets, independent shops, and riverside pubs give it character

Greenwich Market has operated under Royal Charter since 1700 and is now home to independent traders selling everything from art and antiques to fashion, crafts, and handmade goods.

There is also a wide choice of independent cafés, restaurants, and pubs around the historic centre, while the River Thames provides another place to walk, relax, or stop for a drink.

Simply London specifically highlighted the area's weekend markets, independent shops, and riverside pubs as part of its reason for ranking West Greenwich so highly.

And if you want even more choice, nearby Blackheath has its own village centre with cafés, restaurants, and independent shops.

It means you can spend a Saturday exploring a market, walking through Greenwich Park, and finishing beside the Thames without needing to venture into central London.

Ultimately, that is what makes West Greenwich such an appealing place to live.

You get the greenery and community feel of a village, the history and culture of one of London's most famous areas, and fantastic transport links.
