How Thamesmead has changed in only a few short years

Thousands of new homes, modern public spaces and community facilities are reshaping the area as part of a long-term programme to transform the once-iconic post-war estate.

Revitalised Thamesmead

Backed by Peabody, the massive redevelopment is reshaping the area, which was previously known for its towering concrete blocks and elevated walkways.

These once-famous film backdrops became a symbol of neglect, but now they are giving way to progress.

New Town Centre

The most significant change is around Southmere Lake, where Cygnet Square now stands as the new town centre.

The area, previously an ageing housing estate, has been reimagined into a bustling public square surrounded by modern apartment buildings, shops, and The Nest Library and community hub.

The first phase of the regeneration has delivered more than 500 new homes, over half of them classified as affordable.

The square has also introduced new pedestrian routes and landscaped public spaces, making the lakeside more welcoming.

Binsey Walk's Transformation

A short walk away, Binsey Walk is a testament to the ongoing transformation.

The old 1970s housing blocks have been demolished, and construction is progressing on hundreds of new energy-efficient homes.

Once completed, the development will offer 329 homes as part of the second phase of the South Thamesmead regeneration, along with new streets, improved public spaces, and better connections to the neighbourhood.

The Lakeside Centre, a well-known Thamesmead building overlooking Southmere Lake, has been revitalised into a creative and community hub.

The refurbished building now houses artists' studios, workspaces, a café, and community facilities.
