A man was treated at the scene after a fire at a recycling centre in Bermondsey burned for more than six hours and sent huge plumes of smoke across the capital.
15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters tackled the blaze at the site on Landmann Way after calls were received just after 5.30pm yesterday (June 8), reports London Now.
Crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich, and surrounding fire stations worked late into the night and the fire was brought under control just before midnight.
The London Ambulance Service treated a man at the scene.
An “avoid the area” warning was issued, and residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to a significant amount of smoke in the area
Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, who attended the scene, said: "Firefighters worked hard overnight and have now fully extinguished this fire.
"At its height, the fire involved a large amount of refuse and the roof of a warehouse unit. A van and a car were also destroyed by the fire.
"One man was treated on scene by London Ambulance Service.
"Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed.
"Loose embers were also reported, which is normal during large fires.
“Residents were advised to pour water onto them if they were concerned about loose embers on or near their properties, but if they did catch something alight, to call 999 immediately.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
