The Crown Blackheath ranked among London’s best veggie Sunday roasts

The Crown in Blackheath has been ranked ninth overall for its Sunday roast offering in new research by Barratt London, which analysed thousands of Google reviews to identify the best boroughs and pubs across the capital.

The pub, located on Tranquil Vale and dating back to the 16th century, stood out for the quality of its roasts, according to reviews, earning a sentiment score of 89.2.

The ranking forms part of a wider study looking at both traditional and vegetarian Sunday roasts.

UK Google searches for “Sunday roast” have risen by 78 per cent in the past three months, according to researchers, while searches for “London roast” reached 75,000 last month alone.

Barratt London’s research assessed venues using data from the Google Maps API, focusing on establishments with ratings of 4.0 or higher where reviews specifically mentioned Sunday roasts or vegetarian roasts.

While Islington claimed the top spot overall, Greenwich was ranked the second-best borough in London for a Sunday roast.

The borough achieved an overall score of 93, thanks to 24 top-rated roast venues and a near-perfect average sentiment score of 96. The write-up praised Greenwich’s “historic charm” and “village-like streets”, highlighting cosy pubs and riverside taverns as ideal spots for a traditional Sunday lunch.

Greenwich was also home to one of the capital’s top-performing pubs in the rankings, with The Guildford Arms placing second overall for a traditional roast, achieving a sentiment score of 96.8.

Highlighted as one of the best pubs in London, The Crown in the neighbouring area of Blackheath also made the top ten list.

With views across Blackheath from its upstairs dining room, the pub has had a six-figure revamp.

Alongside traditional roasts, The Crown has developed a vegetarian-friendly menu, with vegetarian options including lentil and wild mushroom bourguignon, creamy woodland mushrooms on sourdough, and a whole baked Camembert served with dried cranberries, nuts and artisan bread.

Vegetarian diners can also choose from a range of sides and puddings, including sticky toffee pudding and vanilla crème brûlée.

Sunday roasts at The Crown are a particular draw, with vegetarian diners offered seasonal meat-free alternatives alongside all the classic trimmings for around £20.

The pub underwent a major revamp in 2024, closing for five weeks while the interiors and upstairs dining room were refreshed.

The refurbishment introduced a rich colour scheme of deep greens and reds, with brass details, fireplaces and walls lined with artwork and books.

Upstairs, the former function room was transformed into a dedicated restaurant space known as Charlie’s Den, where Sunday roasts are served weekly.

Reacting to the latest recognition, general manager Jan Mullerson said the ranking was a proud moment for the team.

“We’re absolutely delighted to be recognised as one of London’s best vegetarian-friendly pubs,” Jan said.

“At The Crown we believe great pub food should be inclusive, seasonal and full of flavour, and our team puts real care into making vegetarian dishes that stand proudly alongside everything else on the menu.

“This recognition means a great deal to all of us.”
