HOSPITAL chiefs have apologised for the “unacceptable treatment” a cancer sufferer received at Queen Mary's.
Anthony Jones, 74, of Mount Culver Avenue, Sidcup, was taken to the hospital on October 9 last year with suspected pneumonia.
The prostate cancer sufferer died on October 13, after what his daughter, Christine McNally, described as four days of “sheer hell” at the hospital.
She claims she “didn't want to leave his side” because she was worried he was being left on his own by nurses.
Mrs McNally, 50, also of Mount Culver Avenue, said: “It was a nightmare all week. On the second day he was in hospital, we complained to staff we felt he was just being left, after finding him with his head on a metal pillow-rest.
“Another thing was that the fluid charts which every patient is meant to have were not filled in and not in his medical records after he died.”
She added: “Even when he died, we waited two hours with him propped up with the oxygen still on, for the doctor to turn up to certify his death.
“We spent some 62 precious hours with my father to give him support and I am so glad we did.”
The hospital said the family's concerns have been a matter of investigation.
“We have tried to answer all their queries. We understand this is a traumatic time for the family and offer our condolences on their loss.”
