According to the most recent data, just 799 new homes were built in Greenwich over the 12 months from April 2023.
This was the lowest number since 2013, and significantly down on the pre-pandemic peak of 3,351.
It comes as housing secretary Angela Rayner has claimed that "years of inaction" has left Britain without the homes it needs, and threatened that developers could lose their land to local authorities if they leave sites unfinished.
Despite the slowdown in housebuilding in Greenwich, figures show that the number of affordable homes being delivered is on the up.
Three-quarters of new developments in the borough are now affordable, for which rents are set at up to 80 per cent of market rates, with the number being built reaching an eight-year high in 2023/24.
Around a quarter of these have been built for social rent, set at around half of market rates.
Greater London Authority data shows that Greenwich is leading the way when it comes to this type of housing as the borough with the most affordable homes currently being built.
Greenwich Council has now blamed the fall in overall homebuilding on “a combination of economic factors”, claiming this is a “national trend”.
A council spokesperson added: “We're tackling the housing crisis every way we can.
“We've launched the biggest council housing project in a generation, delivering 1,750 new, low or zero carbon homes for local people, as well as buying homes and actively partnering with developers to get more shovels in grounds and roofs over heads.
“Despite huge external challenges we’ve topped the charts for the third year running to have the most affordable homes underway in London.
“While we acknowledge the scale of the crisis, we are on track to delivering the most council housing in a generation and are working with key partners on innovative regeneration projects that will deliver growth across the borough."
