New data has revealed Southwark to be the south east London borough with the highest number of burglaries between 2022 and 2023.

The data was analysed by Churchill Support Services and taken from Police UK and Scottish Government websites, and it revealed London to be the sixth worst hotspot for burglary in the UK, with a total of 56,031 recorded burglaries.

Southwark was found to be the south east London borough with the highest number of burglaries, with a total of 2,575 burglaries between 2022 and 2023, at a rate of 8.3 per 1000 people.

Although figures revealed that numbers had fallen by three percent compared to the previous year.

In Lewisham there were a total of 2,058 burglaries recorded between 2022 and 2023, with a rate of 6.9 burglaries per 1000 people - which marked a five per cent increase.

In Greenwich there were a total of 1,630 recorded burglaries between 2022 and 2023, with a rate of 5.6 burglaries per 1000 people.

Statistics revealed that burglaries in Greenwich had increased by seven percent.

In Bromley there were a total of 1,588 burglaries recorded between 2022 and 2023, with a rate of 4.8 burglaries per 1000 people.

In the borough, burglaries were recorded to have increased during the year by 11 percent. 

Bexley was revealed to have the lowest rate of burglaries in south east London, with 914 recorded incidents between 2022 and 2023, although according to figures Bexley was recorded as the borough with the highest increase of 15 percent.

The Kent boroughs of Dartford and Gravesham were revealed to have experienced a decrease in burglaries of 25 percent, with 841 burglaries recorded between 2022 and 2023.

According to Churchill Support Services, London’s average rate of burglary was revealed to be 6.3 percent per 1000 residents, marking a 4 percent increase in burglaries from the previous year.

According to figures, burglaries and theft were found to amount to a whopping £12.9 billion in costs every year.

The average value of items stolen during a home burglary was found to amount up to £2,800, with an extra £600 for damages and repairs.

With a burglary taking place every two minutes according to data, business owners and homeowners are being advised to take security precautions as a preventative measure.
