This has to be one of the more impressive roundabouts you are likely to see.

This photo from 1967 shows the monument to the Countess of Ellesmere, Lady Harriet Egerton which had been built on Manchester Road, Walkden, at the junction with Bolton Road.

The Bolton News: Walkden monument, 1967

The monument stayed in its original location for a century before it was decided the junction was becoming too busy and needed traffic lights rather than a roundabout.

The monument was dismantled and rebuilt in the grounds of St Paul’s Church on Manchester Road.

On this photo it’s interesting to see the sign for the M62. And you can see than even back then there was still plenty of traffic on the roads.
