Community champions and stand-out residents, businesses and organisations have been honoured for their efforts at this year's Celebration of Newtown Awards.

Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council's annual awards were held at the Hafren Theatre celebrating the best of the town's people that are making a real difference in their communities.

Individuals and groups were nominated and awarded across eight different categories on Wednesday, April 10.

The awards were presented by Newtown Mayor Councillor John Byrne, who said: “Your tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to improving Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn do not go unnoticed.

"You should be immensely proud of your achievements.”

The Sports Award went to Newtown White Stars FC, and the Climate and Sustainability Award was presented to Circular Economy Mid Wales (CEMW). The worthy winners of the Young Person/Youth Group Award were Newtown Army Cadets.

The Business of the Year Award for innovation and enterprise went to Textile Junkies. Third-sector Business of the Year Award was scooped by Rekindle followed by leisure, tourism and hospitality Business of the Year award winners Hummingbird.

Christine Evans was announced as this year's Volunteer of the Year. While the Knit and Natter group was recognised with the Creative Arts Contribution Award.

Newtown mayor Cllr John Byrne added that the ceremony was an opportunity to honour and celebrate the "remarkable talents, acts of kindness, and accomplishments" in the town.

"Throughout this year, we've witnessed an array of inspiring stories among the nominees being honoured tonight, shining a spotlight on the talent and compassion within our community," he said.

Well-respected and recently retired PCSO Graham Jennings was presented with a special and prestigious Honorary Freeman award for his hard work helping others.

“For many years, he has been a source of reassurance and friendliness, leaving an indelible mark on our community," Cllr Richard Edwards said. "Graham's contributions extend far beyond his presence; he has played a vital role in both educating and safeguarding us.”

Community Fund Recognition Awards were presented to Mid Wales Model Engineering Society, Newtown WI, Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre, Happy Holidays - Hub of Hope Foundation, Newtown and District Civic Society, Treowen CP Primary School, 2nd Newtown Guides Unit, N-Able, The Hafren,  Newtown Silver Band, Mid Wales Wildcats Basketball Club, Penygloddfa CP School and Cultivate.

There was also a special recognition award to honour the 150th anniversary of the Newtown Fire Service.

The evening concluded with a special mention of the 50th anniversary of the Town Council. Cllr John Byrne said: "The Town Council stands as a beacon of advocacy and support for all who choose to live, learn, work, and visit our town.

“We are committed to amplifying the voices of our residents, ensuring that every individual feels valued, heard, and empowered."
