Police have flocked to a major road in Bermondsey after a man was reportedly waving a knife around at another person.

The incident happened in Rotherhithe New Road at around 12.25pm yesterday (January 30).

Officers attended and a search was carried out of the area, but no one was found.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said it is aware that the “distressing” incident was shared on X (formally known as Twitter).

It added that residents should be reassured that police enquiries into this incident are ongoing.

The full statement from Metropolitan Police says: “We are aware of a distressing video circulating on social media which shows a male holding a knife and waving it at another person.

“This video was taken on Rotherhithe New Road, SE16, at around 12:25hrs on Tuesday, 30 January.

“Officers were made aware of this incident and attended the scene shortly after.

“Despite searching the area, there was no trace of the man at this time.

“We would like to reassure local residents that enquiries into this incident are ongoing.

“We would encourage anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed anything or who has any information about the identity of the male to get in touch with police as soon as possible.
