A scout leader and "Beckenham hero" has died aged 88.

John Potter, Scout Leader for the 5th Beckenham South Scout Group, died at Lewisham Hospital on January 28.

Known in the scouting community for his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering dedication, 5th Beckenham South Scout Group says John will be deeply missed.

The group posted a tribute on its Facebook page - saying John became an integral part the group as soon as he joined in 1969, taking on a number of roles, from caretaker to quartermaster, and becoming Scout Leader in 1970.

It added that his lasting influence was seen in him doubling the size of the scout hut with his bare hands, and raising tens of thousands of pounds through organising jumble sales or waste paper collections.

John's 55 years with the group had such a profound impact that many of the scouts assumed he lived at the scout hut.

His service over the decades was recognised by the Mayor of Bromley’s Award for Outstanding Service in 2007.

In 2014 Mr Potter was awarded The Silver Wolf - the highest honour from The Scout Association for exceptional services.

The tribute to John Potter on Facebook said: "It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Potter - a revered and cherished figure among the scouting community and an honourable man admired around Beckenham and beyond.

"He was a good man who dedicated his life to others."

Chair of the scout group, Oliver Colville, added: "He is extremely well known across Beckenham and Bromley and touched the hearts and minds of thousands of children across many decades.

"He’s a born and bred Beckenham hero."

Further announcements will be made regarding his funeral.
