During the Christmas holidays, I went to watch Wonka at Bromley Picturehouse. It did not disappoint.

Wonka was released in UK cinemas on December 8 2023. It is directed by Paul King, starring Timothée Chalamet as the title character, Willy Wonka.

Wonka is about the early life of Roald Dahl’s well-known chocolatier, Willy Wonka, from his popular book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has previously been adapted into two films in 1971 and 2005, both of which are extremely popular. Wonka is a prequel to the book, telling the story of the chocolate-maker’s origin.

This film is about one man’s passion and determination to achieve his dreams, accompanied by heart-warming, supportive characters who follow him along the way. Imaginative, spectacular and funny, this film is suitable for people of all ages. It also has many catchy songs, such as A Hatful of Dreams and A World of Your Own, to complement the colourful scenes.

The film reminded me of the Paddington movies, mainly because director Paul King also directed Paddington and Paddington 2. Many actors, including Hugh Grant (Oompa Loompa) and Sally Hawkins (Willy Wonka’s mother), also starred in the Paddington movies.

My favourite character has to be Noodle, played by 14 year-old actress Calah Lane. She is Willy Wonka’s best friend, who he meets at the beginning of the film, and they work together to accomplish their dreams. Combining Noodle’s practical ‘brains’ and Wonka’s imagination, they are the perfect duo.

This is a great film and I highly recommend people go watch it.
