11 people were evacuated from properties in Woolwich as flooding caused a seven-metre deep sink hole in the area.

Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called the scene on St Mary Street at 9.30pm yesterday (Tuesday, December 12).

The sink hole was caused by a burst water main, and a 25-metre cordon was put in place as firefighters dealt with the incident.

No injuries were reported.

The road was closed between the junctions of Sunbury Street and Kingsman Street while crews worked to make the scene safe.

The incident was over by around 1am this morning (Wednesday, December 13).

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Three fire engines and around 15 firefighters were called to flooding that had caused a sinkhole on St Mary Street in Woolwich.

“A water main had burst causing a sinkhole measuring around seven metres deep.

“Firefighters evacuated 11 people from three properties and a 25-metre cordon was put in place.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“One of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders was used as an observation tower at the scene.

“St Mary Street was closed between the junction of Sunbury Street and Kingsman Street whilst crews worked with partners to make the scene safe.

“The Brigade was called at 2130 and the incident was over for firefighters at 0058.

 “Firefighters from Plumstead and Greenwich Fire Stations attended the scene.”
