A large number of south east London residents have been dealing with no water or low pressure since Monday morning.

Thames Water has confirmed that problems have been reported in two postcodes and has said that the issue is due to a burst water pipe in Footscray Road, outside the Roots4Life charity.

Tankers are being used to pump water into the area and water from outside the zone is being sent through the pipe network – hoping to improve water pressure in the two postcodes.

The issue appears to be affecting SE9 and BR7 including Eltham, Mottingham, New Eltham, Chislehurst, Falconwood, Beckenham, Bromley, Chislehurst, Keston, Orpington, Swanley and West Wickham.

Izzy Bristol, deputy manager at Roots4Life on Footscray Road, said: "Luckily the Roots4Life building has not been impacted and we intend to have our free community meal this Wednesday as planned.

"All our thoughts are with the local community and especially vulnerable residents.  We are in contact with our local ward councillors and Thames Water to try to help all affected."

Roots4Life hosts a weekly community fridge every Wednesday from 3pm to 5pm, offering free access to tinned and microwavable food without the need for registration.

Thames Water has thanked locals for their patience.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We’re sorry if you’ve been affected by a large burst pipe in Footscray Road, SE9, which has caused low pressure and supply interruptions.

“We’re using tankers to pump water into the area, as well as bringing in water from outside the area through our pipe network.

“As a result, water pressures have improved, but we’ll closely monitor this through the busy early morning period.

“Thank you for your patience while we work to put things right.

“We'll provide updates here once we have more news.”
