New mobile ULEZ cameras installed in vans are being rolled out across the newly expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone.

According to TFL’s Data Protection Impact Assessment, 20 of these mobile camera vehicles will be in operation across the ULEZ zone.

The scheme would be enforced in the same way that TFL operates other road charging schemes, using a combination of existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras along with newly installed cameras and mobile ANPR cameras.

The mobile cameras, installed in electric vans, are expected to be moved across boroughs on a day-to-day basis.

They will be deployed in areas that currently don’t have a large amount of camera coverage or where fixed cameras are currently non-operational.

TFL began testing the new mobile ANPR cameras from July 24 in these areas.

TFL additionally confirmed that these vehicles would be “clearly signposted” to the public, along with new road signs to mark the new boundary of the recently expanded ULEZ.

In a statement, TFL has said that the cameras are part of a mix of cameras that were part of an “extensive camera network.”

TFL additionally advised owners of non-compliant vehicles to check whether their vehicle was compliant and to explore the support available.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We have an extensive camera network which is sufficient to support the effective operation of the scheme.

“We have deployed some mobile units as part of the mix of cameras.

“Anyone driving a non-compliant vehicle within the expanded zone will be detected, and we advise everyone to check whether their vehicle is compliant and to consider the various support that is available.”
