A SYDENHAM man, accused of murdering a Rastafarian musician, escaped by bus an Old Bailey jury heard last week.

Garfield Stewart, 23, of Vigilant Close, Sydenham, is charged with shooting Junior George Collins through the heart after being ejected from the Rastafarian Tabernacle in St Agnes Place, Kennington.

Michael Worsley QC, prosecuting, said Stewart and two of his brothers Gayon, 19, and Richard, 16, had been part of a four-strong gang which had been causing trouble at the temple in September 1999, allegedly included drug dealing.

As Mr Collins lay fatally injured inside the temple, the gang escaped, with Garfield Stewart getting on a 159 bus.

The QC said the 40-year-old musician died after a bullet was shot through the front door hitting him in the back and ripping through his heart.

It is alleged Stewart fired the fatal shot after being forced out of the temple.

The trial continues.
