A pensioner and his carer stole £2,000 from M&S by wheeling a trolley stacked with luxury goods out of the supermarket.

Michael O’Regan, 72, and his carer Sarah Baker, 54, managed to evade security and leave the shop with bottles of brandy, wine, meat joints and high-end seafood items.

However, the man and his government-paid-carer were later identified and hauled in for voluntary interviews at the police station, where they gave “no-comment” responses.

O’Regan and Baker were charged with shoplifting from the Sevenoaks store and both admitted the offence on the dock at Maidstone Magistrates Court.

O’Regan, from Waterbank Road in Catford, suffers with respiratory illness COPD and is in poor health.

Baker, of Iverhurst Close in Bexleyheath, is paid by the government to care, has financial difficulties.

Debbie Jones, prosecuting, explained how M&S staff used CCTV footage to retrace the pair’s steps through the store.

Ms Jones said: “They went into the store at 12.42pm and put various items into the trolley and left without paying.

“They stole meat joints, luxury seafood items, wine and more.”

O’Regan had one previous conviction for dishonesty in 2005, and Baker had one previous caution.

Magistrates fined both £80 and ordered they pay the £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge.

Both had to pay £100 compensation to the M&S store on London Road.
