Train drivers' union ASLEF has announced that Southern Rail will be running an amended timetable this week after its members will be implementing a withdrawal of non-contractual overtime.

This move is part of the ongoing national dispute over pay, affecting 16 companies including Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, Great Western Railway and Southern Rail.

As a result of the withdrawal, an amended timetable with fewer services will be in place, leading to busier trains, especially during peak hours.

These changes will be in place from Monday, June 3 to Saturday, June 8.

Commuters are advised to expect longer queues and the possibility of not being able to board their chosen service.

Southern said that it is important for travellers to allow extra time for their journeys.

Additionally, engineering works may still impact some late night and early morning services.

In terms of compensation for delays, only the usual Delay Repay compensation will be provided for delays against the published timetable.

Compensation claims should only be made if the train in question is listed in the revised timetable, and compensation will only be paid for actual delays of fifteen minutes or more against the limited service operating during this period.

General secretary Mick Whelan said: "Once again we find ourselves with no alternative but to take this action.

“We have continually come to the negotiating table in good faith, seeking to resolve the dispute.

“Sadly, it is clear from the actions of both the train operating companies and the government that they do not want an end to the dispute.

“Their goals appear to be to continue industrial strife and to do down our industry.

"We don't want to inconvenience the public.

“We just want to see our members paid fairly during a cost of living crisis when inflation is running at above 10 per cent, and to not see our terms and conditions taken away.

"It's time for the government and the companies to think again and look for a resolution."
