A “warm and kind” mum from Welling has died at the age of 52, after a short battle with cancer.

Belinda Hulyer was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2023 with hopes of recovery, but she was then admitted to hospital in late May and was given a prognosis of three to six months to live.

But Belinda passed away in the same week and she lost her life to the illness on June 4.

The mum-of-three was a care professional at Home Instead in Erith, a company which supports clients in their homes across Abbey Wood, Belvedere, Bexleyheath, Dartford and West Gravesend.

News Shopper:

Christina Uppenkamp, co-director of the company, to set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the Hulyer family and Belinda’s funeral.

She told the News Shopper that Belinda was signed off sick from March 2023 and was initially discussing treatment and chemotherapy.

“We thought it would all be fine,” Christina said, but in the beginning of May Belinda fell unwell and went into hospital.

Christina added: “We saw her on the Friday before she went into hospital, as we wanted to bring gifts from our team.

“But a week later she was told she had three to six months to live, but sadly died a few days after.”

Belinda began working for Home Instead in March 2022, Christina said, and was a “committed, warm, kind and a smiley person” who only had positive feedback from clients.

Christina added: “She looked after both clients and her team mates perfectly, and she was just incredible.”

With permission of Derek Huyler, Belinda’s husband for more than 20 years, Christina organised a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of the funeral.

Christina said: “I can't speak on their behalf, but I don't think they were prepared in any shape or form for this.

“She has three children, and at times like this, everybody needs some money.

“I just want to support them help them have the best funeral as possible for Belinda.”

Derek said Belinda was “one-of-a-kind” who “everybody loved”.

He added: “She just got on with everyone – a couple of the ladies she looked after at their homes would often not want anyone else in the house with them but her.

“If Belinda had a flaw, it would be that she couldn’t say no - she would always offer help.”
