A man has gone viral on TikTok after “legally squatting” in an abandoned primary school as a result of soaring rent prices.

TikToker @M4xinlondon has moved into the south London school as part of a guardianship scheme.

This is when unused buildings are rented out at a rate that is slightly below the average rent for the area, to prevent people from illegally squatting there.

His first video reached 4.4 million views, with almost 700,000 likes and over 2,300 comments.

Max explained that it is somewhat strange to live there because all of the toilets and sinks are at knee height, due to the building's previous use as a primary school.

There are around 20 other people living in the building and Max said that most of those people “seem to be doing pretty creative stuff”.

He said that it was the only place in London where he managed to set up a studio and that the person who lives in the room nextdoor to him ripped out all of his floorboards to create a photography studio.

Max added that everything in the building is communal, such as the showers, kitchen and toilets, and that “everything seems to break all the time”.

He said: “The main reason I wanted to move here though is because it allows me to make music that I can’t really do if I’m sharing a house with other people.

“And, you guys don’t need to worry, the children have been moved to a new school that has just been built.”

Videos shared by Max show the old classroom displays, P.E. equipment and even a playground.

He promises to bring his followers along the journey as he navigates living in this unusual guardianship property.
