The number of crashes in north London has remained unchanged over the past decade, despite fewer road journeys being made across the capital.

According to the most recent figures released by Department for Transport, 5,214 collisions were recorded in north London in 2021, compared to 5,321 in 2012.

It comes despite the fact the number of vehicle miles travelled across the capital has dropped by 800 million since 2012.

There were 16 deaths on north London roads in 2021, just over half of the 30 recorded in 2012.

Many north London councils have committed to reducing this number even further. Haringey recently said that it was on course to eliminate all road deaths by 2041.

This is in line with the Mayor of London’s ‘Vision Zero’ strategy,  which also aims to eliminate serious injuries from traffic collisions in the capital’s street over the next two decades.

Haringey Council will invest £3.5 million over the next 12 months in new traffic safety measures, including new crossings and speed restrictions.

Deaths and crashes by borough

In 2021, the authority recorded five deaths on its road network, the second highest total across north London.

Enfield was the north London borough with the most road traffic collisions in 2021 at 905, while Brent recorded the most fatalities in the whole of London with 6.

Harrow had the lowest number of road traffic collisions, recording 385 in 2021, and recorded just one death.

Enfield and Islington did not record a single fatal crash on their road network in 2021.

Across London, Lambeth was the borough with the most road traffic collisions, recording 1,198 in 2021.

In east London, Tower Hamlets suffered from the highest number of collisions, recording 1,114.

What is being done?

Walking and cycling commissioner Will Norman said: “Protecting everyone on the road, particularly people walking, cycling and motorcycling who are most likely to be killed or injured, is a top priority.

“We are determined to eliminate deaths and serious injuries from London's roads in line with the Mayor’s Vision Zero goal.

“Lowering speeds, continued investment in walking and cycling schemes, and transforming dangerous junctions are key to reducing road danger.

“We'll continue to work with TfL, the Met Police and London's boroughs to make it easier and safer for everyone on London’s roads, creating a safer, greener London for everyone.”
