Firefighters have issued a warning after incense sticks caused a house fire in Lewisham.

The Brigade were called to house fire on Marischal Road just after 6pm on Saturday (April 8).

Part of a first-floor bedroom at a two-storey end-of-terraced house was damaged by fire.

Two people left the house before firefighters arrived.

The fire was under control by 6.43pm and is believed to have involved an incense stick.

The London Fire Brigade has issued a warning to “take care” when using incense sticks.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “Candles, incense sticks and oil burners are one of the most common causes of fire.

“It is really important that you never leave them unattended and keep them away from anything that could catch fire such as curtains, furniture, or clothes.

"We advise to place these in a suitable fire resistant candleholder which won’t be knocked over, and make sure you put them out entirely when you leave the room and especially before bed.

“Firefighters recommend that you have a look at our online Home Fire Safety Checker to make sure there are no hidden hazards in your home.

“The online tool will ask you a series of questions that will help us work out the level of risk in your home, or the home of someone you care for.

“It only takes a few minutes to get tailored advice to keep yourself and loved ones safe from fire.”
