ECO-FRIENDLY shopping was given the green light last week as visitors made tracks to a shopping centre to learn how to cut their carbon footprint.

The Glades shopping centre in Bromley teamed up with Bromley Council to unveil two new car charging points for electric or hybrid cars last Thursday.

Located on level one of the car park, the Elektrobays will now be available free to shoppers at The Glades.

There was also a chance to test drive a state-of-the-art electric car at the launch which was part of Glades Goes Green week from June 2 to June 6.

A display of sculptures made from recycled materials was on show all week as part of an exhibition by London Zoo, along with information boards about recycling, carbon emissions and energy.

One of the sculpture designs, Frederick the Frog by artist Anthony Wilson, was created to highlight the plight of amphibians.

Meanwhile, last Monday Glades staff were on hand to promote the benefits of walking, cycling, using public transport or car-sharing to get to the shops.

There was also a chance for visitors to bag a prize by swapping their single-use plastic bags for a reusable Glades carrier.

The shopping centre will now be handing out a £10 gift voucher every week until August to one lucky shopper who is spotted with the Glades bag.

The RSPB attended last Friday to explain how climate change is affecting local bird life.

Portfolio holder for environment and leisure Councillor Colin Smith said: "We all need to examine our lifestyles and consider what we can do to be more green.

"From taking part in our door-to-door recycling service, to helping out on a practical conservation tasks or purchasing a greener vehicle.

"Many residents have taken up these challenges, it's not as difficult as you think."

He added: "We are pleased the week has been a success and hope shoppers feel more equipped with the information they need to take action."

The week-long schedule of activities coincided with World Environment Day on June 5.
