IT was the clash of the titans at the final of this year's Matthew Clarke memorial football tournament.
Two past winners of the tournament, held annually for primary schools in Thamesmead, slugged it out on the pitch for the honour of the 2008 crown.
The tournament marks the death from cancer nine years ago of Matthew, a football-mad pupil at St John Fisher Catholic Primary School in Kale Road, Thamesmead.
This year the schools involved fielded more than 100 children in the seven-a-side contest.
The teams were split into four groups and the semi-finals featured Heronsgate against St Margaret Clitherow and Hawksmoor against Castilion.
The final was between 2006 trophy winners Heronsgate versus 2007 winners Hawksmoor, with Hawksmoor Primary School in Bentham Road, emerging the two-nil victors.
Dawn Young, head of community services for community trust Trust Thamesmead, said: "The kids were really competitive but as they were knocked out, they stayed to cheer the other teams on."
