EDNA Paton had a stroke five years ago but still lives at home thanks to a team of carers.

Her carers, and many others employed by the not-for-profit Care Trust Plus in Bexley, received their own vote of thanks at the trust's awards ceremony for long-serving carers and those who have achieved new qualifications.

This year's awards were presented by Bexley Council's cabinet member for health and adult social care, Councillor Sharon Massey.

Among the award winners was one of Mrs Paton's carers Charmayne Appleton, a home carer for 18 years, who received her NVQ Level 2 award.

Mrs Paton, 87, gets practical help with a range of everyday tasks from her team of carers who visit three times a day.

She said: "It is my lifeline.

"Without this care and support, I could probably not stay in my own home.

"I cannot do the many things people take for granted, without some assistance."

Mrs Appleton said: "I enjoy being a carer as I get a real pleasure from helping people who need it."
