​Three pedestrians that were involved in a fatal crash last night in Woolwich are believed to be a dad and his two young children, according to a Greenwich councillor.

A family friend told the Standard that the pedestrian who died was an eight-year-old boy, and that his dad remains in hospital seriously injured along with his brother, 10. 

Police have now confirmed that an eight-year-old boy has died and that a man in his 40s and boy, 10, are fighting for their lives in hospital.

A cabinet member for culture at Greenwich council has claimed in a tweet that the "family were hit by a speeding motorbike” whilst on their way to prayer at the Greenwich Islamic Centre.

A deputy at the mosque has described the young victim as “so respectful” and had “lots of friends”, according to the Evening Standard.

Police were called at 7.30pm yesterday (February 19) after reports a motorcycle crash with a group of pedestrians on Plumstead Road, near the junction with Lenton Street.

Paramedics and air ambulance attended the scene - a motorcyclist and three pedestrians were found injured.

One of the pedestrians was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The other three people have been taken to hospital for treatment; police do no not currently know their health conditions.

There have been no further details about the victim officially released by police at this stage.

Deputy Imam Sayed Kafil Ahmed at the mosque told the Standard: “I was calling prayers when someone came in and said what happened.

“I went outside it was a mess. The road was blocked. We will say prayers for him.

“The boy who died used to come here for lessons, he was the perfect student. He listened and was so respectful. He was our best student. 

“Normally kids don’t listen, he was different. He had lots of friends.”

Family friend Mustafa Zachariah told the Standard: “They were going to the mosque when it happened. I was there just minutes after.

“The three were thrown quite a distance. The father is seriously injured. His eight-year-old son was killed and ten-year-old brother was also injured.

“I’m like an uncle to them. We are all devastated.” 

Adel Khairehc, cabinet member for culture at Greenwich council, said on Twitter: “Horrific scenes outside @GICMosque a father and his two young children were hit by a speeding motorcycle on the way to prayer.”

@JamesDelamare on twitter reported that there were at least 15 to 20 emergency services on the scene, with both roads blocked up.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: Police were called to reports of a motorcycle in collision with a group of pedestrians in Plumstead Road, near the junction with Lenton Street, SE18.

“Officers, London Ambulance Service and the Air Ambulance all attended the scene. “Four people – a motorcycle rider and three pedestrians - were involved.

“Despite the best efforts of the emergency services one of the pedestrians – a male (no further details) died at the scene.

“Enquires into the circumstances continue.”
