A man has died following a flat fire in Southwark this morning (Sunday, February 11).

The fire broke out in a flat on Brook Drive in Southwark and London Fire Brigade were called at 9.52am. 

The fire caused significant damage to the ground floor flat.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescied a man from the fire, but he died at the scene.

A woman from a neighbouring flat was also rescued by firefighters.

She was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews as she was suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire was under control by 11.27am.

The fire is being investigated by LFB's Fire Investigation Team and the Metropolitan Police Service.

A spokesperson fo the London Fire Brigade said: "A man has sadly died in a flat fire on Brook Drive in Southwark this morning.

"Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters were called to a fire in a ground floor flat, which was significantly damaged by the fire.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a man from the fire, but sadly he died at the scene.

"A woman from a neighbouring flat was also rescued by firefighters.

"She was suffering from smoke inhalation and taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews. 

"The Brigade was called at 0952 and the fire was under control by 1127.

"Fire crews from Old Kent Road, Dockhead, Richmond and Lambeth attended the scene.

"The fire is being investigated by our Fire Investigation Team and the Metropolitan Police Service."
