THE family of a man who died after a violent confrontation have set up a charity in his memory.

Paul Baker was knocked unconscious after he was involved in a fight with a group of men in the early hours of May 7 last year.

He never recovered from the head injuries he suffered when he collapsed to the pavement outside The Lounge bar in Whitehorse Hill, Chislehurst.

He died 32 hours later in Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.

Now, his devastated family have set up the Paul Baker Charity to help raise money for the serious head injuries unit at the hospital - and have already raised £6,000.

Paul's mum, Janet, 52, said: "The nurses at the hospital were just fantastic and they still speak to me and say how about sorry they are about Paul.

"We thought it was a nice thing to do to raise some money and hand over a big cheque to help. They did such a good job."

A charity auction at the Marriott Hotel in Bexleyheath on May 30 was held on the same day as Paul's birthday.

He would have been 27.

Last month, two sets of brothers walked free from court after a jury found they were not guilty of causing kitchen fitter Paul's death.

Mrs Baker, of Southborough Lane, Bromley, claims she is still living a nightmare since his death.

She said: "My Paul was such a kind and loving boy.

"The end of the case didn't provide the closure we were hoping for. Sitting there during the trial was like Paul's death was happening all over again."

The responsibility of running Mr Baker's kitchen fitting business has passed to his younger brothers, Mark, 23, and 19-year-old Chris.

Mrs Baker added: "My boys are struggling with his business without him. He used to make all the decisions, hold everyone together and now, with the way the economy is, things are tough.

"They miss their brother like mad."
