SOCIETY members visited The Sands Film Studios in Rotherhithe, which are housed in a 19th-century warehouse resplendent with ships' timbers.

Following coffee and an introductory talk in the vast picture research library, which is available to anyone, we were shown an early film comparing the early 20th Century and present day which was filmed at the studio.

After an excellent lunch came a tour of the workshops where the stage sets for many film and stage companies are built.

Members also viewed the studio stage where a production of The Children's Midsummer Nights Dream is ongoing.

The studios also house an impressive array of costumes, including hats, all produced in their own workshops.

They have been used in films such as Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley, The Other Boleyn Girl with Natalie Portman and Sweeney Todd with Johnny Depp.
