The Woolwich Ferry has been suspended this morning due to fog and poor visibility and has caused traffic queues as commuters are advised to use an alternative route.

The suspension of the Woolwich Ferry has resulted in queues of traffic being reported Northbound on the A102 approaching the Blackwall Tunnel.

Queues of traffic beginning from Sun in the Sands has caused lines traffic for commuters this morning trying to commute across the river.

Further traffic has been reported on the A2 across Blackheath and the A20 due to roadworks in Lewisham.

This morning (February 7), the Met Office advised that there would be “early fog” with some freezing fog patches that “may be slow to clear” through the morning for London.

According to the Met Office the fog is expected to clear, leading to sunny spells and light winds later this afternoon.

The forecast said: “Early frost and freezing fog patches may be slow to clear through the morning.

“Otherwise, a dry day with lengthy sunny spells once the fog has cleared.

“Light winds.

“Maximum temperature 8 °C”.

Twitter user Rania Hafez shared a photo from the balcony of her Woolwich home that showed thick fog this morning.

The caption read: “@BBCR4Today What was that about the weather in the south of England being dominated by sunshine today?

“The view now from my balcony in Woolwich”.

This has led to some travel disruptions and traffic for people traveling in parts of south east London.

In a statement on its website, TFL advised commuters that there would be “no service” on the Woolwich Ferry service and to “use another river crossing”.

The statement says: “There is no service on the Woolwich Ferry this morning due to poor visibility.

“Use another river crossing”.

TFL has not yet advised on what time the Woolwich Ferry will reopen to commuters today.

A further tweet from @BBCTravelAlert at 11:43am confirmed that the Woolwich Ferry remained closed due to poor weather conditions.
