A 'SIEGE' is taking place in Bexley where an armed man is refusing to come down from a rooftop.

Police are at the scene in Wansunt Road trying to get the man to get off the roof because it is believed they want him to help them with their enquiries.

He went up there after officers arrived at the house wanting to speak to him about his non-appearance at court.

The officers knocked at the door at around 7.30am yesterday (June 9) and told the woman who answered that they wanted to speak to him.

But while they were waiting the man clambered out of a bedroom window onto the roof with a knife and he has been there ever since.

The area around the home has been cordoned off.

Robert Rolls, 48, lives in a house inside the taped off area.

He said: "There are a lot of emergency vehicles about and I have asked a couple of police officers but they have said nothing apart from to say we are in no danger.

"I do not even know if the person was there visiting or whether he lives there.

"There have been between four and six police vehicles and yesterday they had police with climbing apparatus and safety equipment."

A nearby resident, who did not want to be named, said: "There is a guy on the roof and he's not coming down.

"He's been up there ever since 7.30am yesterday and he's wanted for something but I don't know what.

"Yesterday there were negotiators speaking to him up on a crane."

She added: "He cannot stay up there for ever, he'll starve to death.

"It has got to end soon."

Four police cars, three ambulances and a fire engine are at the scene.

The fire crew is there to lend the police their ladders and other equipment when needed.
