A GANG of youths attacked a student when he dared to stand up to them, a court heard.

Abdul Yassin-Noor, aged 20, stabbed Faheem Javaid in the back after the 20-year-old confronted yobs who had robbed his younger brother.

Mr Javaid was punched, kicked, beaten with a brick and pounded with a motorcycle helmet in the attack near McDonald's in Well Hall Road, Eltham.

Yassin-Noor, of Rochester Way, Eltham, was convicted of attempted murder at the Old Bailey on Thursday (June 5).

Five other gang members, aged 15 to 17, from Kidbrooke, were found guilty of wounding with intent to cause GBH.

Three of the youths were also convicted of robbery.

All charges were denied.

Mr Javaid was trying to track down the gang after they robbed his 14-year-old brother on a 112 bus on June 25 last year.

He spotted two of the thugs at a bus stop but was soon outnumbered when they called for reinforcements and was threatened with a knife before being set upon by the youths.

Mr Javaid suffered a 10cm deep wound to his back as well as slashes to his face.

Prosecutor Mark Tomassi said: "He confronted them. It was a big mistake because the sort of reaction that followed led very quickly to very serious violence in which Faheem very nearly lost his life."

The defendants claimed they were acting in self- defence.

They were all remanded in custody to be sentenced on July 11.

One of the youths, a 17-year-old, was also convicted of violent disorder and robbery in relation to another incident in Kidbrooke on April 24 last year.

A 16-year-old boy was convicted of violent disorder in connection with the April incident.
