January saw six criminals jailed for various serious offences across south east London – that the News Shopper is aware of.

One offender was jailed for killing his 52-year-old dad, and another was jailed for killing his girlfriend’s 18-month-old baby.

We have summarised the offences which took place below.

Sean Maurice

Sean Maurice stabbed his dad, Paul Maurice, 30 times in the back and chest on the evening of September 14, 2021.

Afterwards, Sean, claimed his 52-year-old father had sexually abused him.

The 31-year-old admitted manslaughter and, following a trial at the Old Bailey, was acquitted of murder on Wednesday, January 25.

Following his conviction, prosecutor William Elmyn Jones KC suggested the victim had been a “dreadful father”.

Sean was sentenced to ten years in prison.

Christian Scott Coombe and Tamika Beaton

Christian Scott killed his girlfriend’s 18-month-old son after a series of assaults and was jailed for nine years.

He repeatedly caused bruises and minor injuries to Andrew Cawker before losing “control” and killing him on July 22, 2019.

The 24-year-old, of Petts Wood, south-east London, had been “besotted” with the child’s mother Tamika Beaton but struggled to cope, the Old Bailey heard.

Tamika, 25, from Peckham, south-east London, was found guilty of child cruelty by wilful neglect following a trial.

Judge Mark Lucraft KC sentenced Tamika to 12 months in custody suspended for 18 months.

Moses Aibamwen

Moses was one of five London men who was jailed over a “county lines” drug dealing operation.

Moses, of Avenue Road, Bexley, was sentenced to four years and ten months' imprisonment.

The men were concerned in the organised distribution of Class A drugs, via a county line running between London and Manchester since January 1, 2021, according to the Met.

Donell Shyngle, 24, Nathaniel Ofori, 23, Moses Aibamwen, 28, and Rojhat El-Sindi, 26, were arrested on November 9, 2021 at the property in Manchester.

The men were all charged with conspiracy to supply crack cocaine and conspiracy to supply heroin alongside Emmanuel Yamoah, 28, who was charged with the same.

James Purnell

James, a prolific shoplifter from Penge, started his prison sentence just four days after his arrest in London.

Between August 29 and December 29, 2022, James Purnell entered Waitrose in Sevenoaks High Street on three separate occasions, where he stole alcohol, electronic toothbrushes and food products valued at more than £1,500.

He also went to the supermarket two more times, during the same period, but left empty-handed when he was challenged by a member of staff.

James, of Oakfield Road, was issued with a Criminal Behaviour Order by Croydon Magistrates’ Court on November 12, 2020.

The order was to last five years and prohibited him from entering any Waitrose or Little Waitrose store in the areas of Greater London, Surrey, Sussex, or Kent.

On Thursday 5 January 2023, he was arrested in London.

Purnell, of Oakfield Road, Penge was later charged with three thefts and five counts of breaching a criminal behaviour order.

He pleaded guilty to the indictments and received one years’ imprisonment.

Richard Rufus

Richard, a former footballer who tricked his family and friends into investing a total of more than £15 million in a foreign currency exchange scam has been jailed for seven-and-a-half years.

The ex-Charlton Athletic player spent hundreds of thousands of pounds funding his own lifestyle after convincing those close to him that their payment would be low risk and high return.

He used his status as a former sportsman to give the impression he was wealthy and successful, when in reality he was failing to make a profit from his trading activities.
