A popular South London pub will get a facelift and a theatre closed since the Covid-19 pandemic will reopen as part of the £22.6 million transformation of Catford in 2023.

Works to revamp the former Catford Constitutional Club are set to begin in early 2023 with the £1.65 million refurbishment set to finish by the beginning of 2024.

The pub’s former managers were forced to leave in August 2019 due to safety problems with the building.

Catford’s the Broadway Theatre will reopen for the first time since 2020 in February, following a £7m facelift which has seen the Grade-II listed building’s seating improved and a new bar area fitted. 

The projects are part of Lewisham Council’s 20-year plan to revamp the corner of South East London and build 2,700 homes in the area.

Half of the homes will be affordable (up to 80 per cent of market prices) and 1,000 of them are set to be available at the cheapest social rents, according to the council.

Transport for London will also begin meetings about moving the South Circular behind Lewisham Council’s Laurence House offices in 2023.

Officials say re-routing the A205 will free up more space for pedestrians and development.

Plans to build 101 affordable homes and shops on Thomas Lane car park are set to be submitted in summer, according to Lewisham Council documents.

Officials hope building work on the project, which will also include 3,000 sq metres of public space, will begin in early 2024, with the new homes completed by 2026.

A new mural is also expected to be installed on Holbeach Road in 2023 Council officers have begun the search for artists to create the work.

New paving, trees and play features have already been fitted on the street as part of £450,000 improvements to the road, which are being paid for by City Hall cash.

Works to improve the area around Catford and Catford Bridge stations will finally be set in motion in 2023 – three years after the council approved £1.5 million from a developer to be used to improve pedestrian access around the rail hubs.

Plans for the improvements are expected to be submitted this summer, with the intention of works beginning in 2024 and finished by the following year. 

The Grade-II listed Broadway theatre, which celebrated its 90th birthday last summer, will reopen to the public from February 12.

Tickets are already on sale for the first shows that will grace its stage, including award-winning comedy Scrummy Mummies. 

The renovation of the Catford Constitutional Club will see the bar area expanded and a new community kitchen fitted on the upper floor.

A previously inaccessible Georgian section of the building at the back will be restored and a new roof terrace will be fitted.

Works to move the South Circular are expected to start in Spring 2025.

The council believes that re-routing the road will open up a large area of land for shops, homes and public space.

New pedestrian crossings and cycle lanes are likely to be added as part of the changes to the road. 

Lewisham Council’s two decade long plans for Catford will eventually see 1970s Catford Shopping Centre redeveloped to create new shops and homes. 

The 1960s Milford Towers estate, which is built over a car park and part of the shopping centre, will also be demolished and rebuilt.
