The RSPCA has called for information after two guinea pigs were abandoned in a freezer bag in Deptford.

The charity has also warned that these incidents could continue to happen as costs continue to rise.

On January 7 two guinea pigs were found abandoned in a Coca-Cola freezer bag outside a construction site near Pepys Playground, Deptford.

Both guinea pigs were recovered safely, however an RSPCA inspector says that the outcome could have been very different for these animals after they were left to freeze in the elements.

Harriet Daliday, RSPCA inspector, said: “Thankfully a passer-by thought it was odd to see a freezer bag hanging on the construction site door frame and decided to investigate.

“After finding the terrified guinea pigs huddled inside, she kindly brought them to her home and cared for them whilst waiting for us to arrive.

“We are very relieved the guinea pigs were spotted. If they had been left there for more than a day it’s very unlikely they would have survived.”

The charity said this case isn’t in isolation and reports of similar incidents of animals being abandoned are occurring more frequently.

The charity recently attended a call to rescue an abandoned kitten who was let in similar circumstances near the Deptford area.

Ms Daliday added: “This is not the first call out we’ve had to this area, we also rescued an abandoned kitten a few weeks ago not far from this site - and we’re worried the cost of living crisis could be the cause of these irresponsible actions.

“Times are tough right now, but we urge anyone who is struggling with caring for an animal to reach out for help.

“However difficult things are, abandoning pets like this is irresponsible and cruel.”

The charity fears that cases of animal abandonment may become more frequent as costs continue to increase, with the charity reporting a 24 per cent increase in abandonment cases over the winter.

Further statistics from their Animal Kindness Index found 28 per cent owners fear that they won’t be able to continue to provide care for their pets.

Ms Daliday said: “Serious money worries mean even the most loving owners are concerned about caring for their pets.

“Sadly we predict that even more animals will be abandoned or neglected as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

“To those able to do so, please help us to protect animals from the cost of living crisis this winter.

The guinea pigs were rescued and are currently being cared for at the RSPCA’s Leybourne animal centre.

The charity is urging anyone with any useful information to contact RSPCA in confidence.

Ms Daliday said: “If anyone recognises these gorgeous guinea pigs or has any useful information they can ring the RSPCA confidentially on 0300 123 8018.”
