A 23-year-old man has died after a stabbing in Woolwich.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing in Brookhill Road just before 5.40pm yesterday – but couldn’t find a victim when they arrived.

At around 5.50pm, a man with stab wounds was dropped off in a car at a hospital in south London.

It is believed that the incidents were linked and the man taken to hospital was stabbed in Brookhill Road.

A crime scene was put in place in the area.

The man was pronounced dead at hospital just after 7.10pm.

Officers are now in the process of contacting his next of kin. 

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 101 and quote reference 5568/29SEP.

Detective Chief Inspector Sal Minhas, who is leading the investigation, said: "My thoughts are with the family and friends of this young man as they come to terms with his tragic death.

"We will do everything we can do support them.

"A dedicated team of detectives are working to establish exactly what happened and track down the people responsible.

"Officers will remain at the scene throughout the day and I would ask anyone with information about the incident to contact us immediately, no matter how minor the detail.

"Tackling violent crime remains a top priority for the Met.

"This incident is a stark reminder that we still have more to do in this area.

"We continue to work alongside the communities we serve to stop violence from happening in the first place."

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “At 5.37pm on Wednesday, 28 September police were called to Brookhill Road, SE18 following reports of a stabbing. 

“Officers attended and a crime scene was started but a victim could not be located. 

“A short time later, at 5.50pm, a 23-year-old man was dropped off by car at a south London hospital with stab wounds. 

“Medical staff responded immediately but despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead at 19:11hrs. 

“It is believed the man likely sustained his injuries in the incident in Brookhill Road. 

“Officers are in the process of informing his next of kin. 

“Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 101, giving the reference 5568/29SEP. 

“Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
