A FOODBANK in south London has faced backlash on Twitter after announcing its closure on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral.

Southwark Foodbank, which is part of the Trussell Trust network, has decided to close for the day on Monday, September 19.

The decision comes as the government announced the day would be an official bank holiday to allow people across Britain to pay their respects to the Queen.

Many Twitter users expressed anger and heartbreak over the decision, asking why it was important to shut food banks.

One user said: “Ridiculous.”

Another one commented: “Please don’t do this. I’m happy to help if needed.”

In a tweet issued by the foodbank said it apologised for not making its process of the closure clear and said that it would typically close on bank holidays as standard.

The full tweet said: “Thank you for your comments on this issue, and sorry that we didn’t make our process clear.

"We would like to reassure you that we close every bank holiday and inform referral agents in advance.

“At sessions before a bank holiday we always provide additional food, open additional sessions and contact everyone referred.

“We would like to thank people who have offered to regularly volunteer, please DM with your email address and we will be in touch.”

Many hospital appointments, funerals, museums, supermarkets, and theatre performances across the UK have also announced closures for Monday.
