THIS IS the moment a huge fire destroyed a large area of wildlife in Southampton.

Shocked onlookers captured the moment flames ripped through Peartree Green on Friday evening.

Smoke can be seen billowing profusely into the sky as the fire rages.

Fire crews from St Mary's, Lyndhurst, Hightown, Eastleigh, Romsey, Gosport, Hardley, Beaulieu and Southsea raced to the scene and battled the blaze for over three hours.

According to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service, 300m by 300m of open land was destroyed.

Many people took to social media to share their disbelief at the incredible fire.

One Twitter user said: "The flames were as big as trees and it was moving quickly.

"Kudos to Hampshire fire. These people deal with stuff like that day in day out. Incredible bravery."

Another said: "It looked horriffic and very close to properties."

Woolston resident John Wells told our reporter - who was on the scene last night - that "never in my life have I seen anything like this before."

The fire service said the cause of the fire is still unknown but is likely a result of scorching temperatures. 

Hampshire Constabulary have also been contacted for further information. 

One fire engine will return to the scene this morning to conduct a reinspection, checking for any remaining hotspots.
