Firefighters have tackled three fires south east London in two days following a long spell of dry weather.

The fires occurred in Orpington, Keston and Crayford on Friday and Saturday last week.

Crews were called to the first fire at an area of woodland and farmland in Orpington in Bromley on Friday at 5.27pm.

The land on Star Lane was destroyed by the fire, which was brought under control by 8.50pm.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters attended the blaze.

On the same night, firefighters were called to Keston in Bromley at 11.21pm.

An area of shrubland was destroyed in the fire.

Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters brought the blaze under control by 12.21am.

The following afternoon, the brigade was called 18 times to a fire at Crayford in Bexley.

The first call taken at 4.44pm.

Shrubland at a recreation ground on Bourne Road was alight, which caused around two hectares of damage.

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters brought the blaze under control by 6.53pm.

London Fire Brigade has pleaded for the public to take extra care to avoid starting these grass fires.

The brigade has given the following advice: “Don't have barbecues in parks, public spaces or on balconies.

“Clear away bottles, glasses and any broken glass to avoid them magnifying the sun and starting a fire.

“Dispose of smoking materials such as cigarettes safely - don’t drop cigarettes on dry ground and don’t drop them out of car windows, as they may land on dry grass and lead to a fire.”

London Fire Brigade is also currently running a campaign to stop the sale of disposable BBQs in environmentally vulnerable areas.

The petition currently has more than 15,250 signatures.

A statement on London Fire Brigade’s website reads: “Disposable barbecues pose a significant fire risk if they are not put out properly, causing grass fires in open spaces and scorching the grassed areas.

“The dry spell has left grassland like a tinderbox and increases the chances of a fire caused by a disposable barbecue.”

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters tackled a number of grass fires around London on Friday and Saturday.
