Fire crews are still at the scene of a fire in Dartford Heath - two days after it started.

One fire engine, an all-terrain vehicle and a ranger still remain on the scene near Rochester Way on the A2.

Kent fire crews are continuing to work their way through the affected areas - checking for remaining hotspots and damping down where needed.

Firefighters have issued a warning to avoid walking on charred areas of ground on Dartford Heath as remaining toxins and fumes that will be present for days to come can be bad for animal and human health.

It comes after a Dartford MP praised firefighters who were still tackling the “perilous” Dartford Heath fire near the A2, 24 hours later.

Gareth Johnson, the MP for Dartford, said that the Kent Fire and Rescue Service “literally threw everything they had at these fires despite incurring heat exhaustion and injuries themselves.”

He added that the hot and dry weather meant everyone had been expecting and “dreading” an event like this happening.

12 fire engines were called to the scene at 12.35pm on Tuesday after a fire broke out on Dartford Heath and spread quickly into a wildfire.

Progress was made overnight, with the operation scaled down to four fire engines, but the blaze continued and on Wednesday morning resources at the scene were increased again.

The fire service is no longer warning drivers on the A2 about impaired visibility from the smoke and says that good progress is being made.

The latest Kent Fire and Rescue update, issued just before 12pm today, said: "One fire engine, an all-terrain vehicle and a ranger remains at the scene of a fire on Dartford Heath, near Rochester Way on the A2.

"Crews are continuing to work their way through the affected areas, thoroughly checking the heath for any remaining hotspots, and damping down where needed.

"Firefighters are reminding everyone to avoid walking on charred areas of ground on Dartford Heath, as remaining toxins and fumes that will be present for some days to come can be bad for the health of people and animals."
