With the Platinum Jubilee weekend fast approaching, the people of Greenwich can look forward to a packed schedule of events right across the borough.

Whilst some may choose to host a street party, picnics, music and other festivities can be found right across the area in honour of the Queen’s 70 years on the throne.

Although some events require booking ahead, many are free and family friendly, so we have compiled a list of a few of the things to try throughout the long weekend.

Platinum Jubilee Celebrations – Old Naval College Greenwich

If you fancy a range of family friendly events to celebrate the weekend, then it may be worth checking out the activities available at the Old Naval College in Greenwich.

Jubilee-themed activities begin on Thursday, June 2 and run through the entire weekend, with everything from family crafts and storytelling to jubilee tours and a royal afternoon tea (although this costs extra).

The weekend also includes performances of A Midsummer Faery Den on Saturday and Sunday, an interactive performance from Lewisham theatre group Teatro Vivo based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Royal Greenwich Together and Platinum Picnic in the Park – Charlton Park

Elsewhere in the Borough, Greenwich’s Charlton Park will be at the centre of activities earlier in the bank holiday weekends.

On Thursday, the annual Royal Greenwich Together festival takes place, with a range of music, sports and fun for the whole family.

On Friday, the park will be hosting a jubilee picnic, with plenty of room for people to bring their own food and drink down and enjoy royal-themed performances from local performers.

Both events are free and do not require a ticket, so people can come down to the park and enjoy good food and entertainment in celebration of the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

Beacon Lighting – Various Locations

If you fancy being involved in some of the ceremonial proceedings of the weekend, you can attend the lighting of one of three jubilee beacons across Greenwich.

These are part of over 1,500 identical beacons simultaneously being lit across the country, as well as other UK overseas territories and commonwealth countries, to commemorate the Queen’s reign.

Beacons will be lit at General Gordon Square, Lesnes Abbey Woods and The Heath in Blackheath at 9.45pm.

The Blackheath lighting also including choir performances with music from across the last 70 years.

Love Your Local Market Jubilee Special – Greenwich Market

In honour of the Jubilee weekend, Greenwich Market will also be extending its annual Love Your Local Market celebrations to coincide with the bank holiday weekend.

The event will see events and activities taking place at the Market throughout the weekend, allowing people to support local businesses whilst also celebrating the Jubilee.

Live music performances will also be taking place across the weekend, with music from Kings Cross Hot Club, Latin American jazz band Stella and her Fellas, and Billie Rowlatt Jazz Quintet among others.
