The full roof of a block of flats in Deptford has been destroyed following a fire which lasted nearly 12 hours.

Around 120 firefighters were tackling the blaze in Creek Road from 1.03pm on Tuesday until 12.51am on Wednesday.

Firefighters stayed at the scene throughout the night to dampen any hotspots.

Around 13 people left the building before the Brigade arrived and there have been no injury reports.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

People in the area were told to close their doors and windows because of the vast amounts of smoke.

Station Commander Ian Smith, who was at the scene, has described it as an "intense fire in challenging conditions".

He explained: "This was an intense fire located in the roof of the building and fire crews worked hard in challenging conditions.

"The fire was behind a number of voids which meant access was difficult and led to this being a very protracted incident.

"The whole of the roof was damaged by the blaze."
