The south of the river is home to some incredibly inspiring celebrities, and we’ve rounded up the familiar faces who have lived in south east London - at least for a point of their lives.

After researching a variety of Wikipedia posts, autobiographies, and fan accounts, we found a surprisingly long list of celebs from south east London.

From movie stars to comedians, fashion designers and more, many of the most talented celebrities have lived in south east London – how exhilarating.

Just think, you could have lived down the same street as David Bowie.

In no particular order, our favourite stars to have – at one point – resided in the News Shopper patch are listed below:

Charlie Chaplin

Walworth, Southwark

Charlie Chaplin is considered one of the greatest comic artists of the screen and one of the most iconic figures in motion-picture history.

Chaplin was born in 1889 in Walworth, South London and is said to have lived comfortably for the first few years of his life.

His parents were born theatre performers – hence the undeniable talent – who unfortunately separated after the comedians birth.

Michael Caine

Rotherhithe, Southwark

On March 14, 1933, Sir Michael Cane was born in St Olave’s Hospital, Rotherhithe in South London to parents Ellen Frances Marie and Maurice Joseph Micklewhite.

Caine, who often plays as a cockney, made his breakthrough in the 1960s with starring roles in British films, such as Zulu.

Since, the movie star has appeared in Batman Begins, Miss Congeniality, The Italian Job and Interstellar.

Gemma Arterton

Gravesend

Former Bond girl, Gemma Arterton, was born in Gravesend and North Kent Hospital and attended Gravesend Grammar School for Girls.

Her breakthrough role was in 2007's St Trinian's, and she has gone on to star in everything from Hollywood blockbusters such as the Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans, to low budget British comedies - Tamara Drew and Song for Marion.

Jude Law

Lewisham and Blackheath

One of the biggest British film stars around today, Lewisham-born Law has starred in films ranging from The Talented Mr Ripley and Closer to Sherlock Holmes and Road to Perdition.

He has also worked with such directors as Kenneth Brannagh, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.

David Bowie

Brixton, Bromley, Beckenham (+ more)

The iconic David Bowie – also known as Ziggy Stardust – was born in Brixton and grew up across south East London.

Locations include attending Stockwell Infants’ School in 1951, studying at the School of Art in Croydon for a brief period of time, living in a ground floor flat in Haddon Hall, Beckenham, and working on the legendary album - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust, in Greenwich.

Bowie is considered as one of the greatest music legends of all times and had exceptional singer-song writing skills.

A true icon who spent a long period of his lifetime in south east London.
