A football fan is setting off on a 68-mile hike to watch his favourite team Charlton Athletic play in a league one clash - in memory of his Nan.

Nick Hurst, 18, will set off from Charlton's home ground The Valley and walk the distance to Cambridge United's Abbey Stadium in time for their match this Tuesday evening.

The youngster, from Sidcup is raising money for the Alzheimer's Society in memory of his nan Sylvia Cue who passed away in December aged 84 after suffering for 15 years with dementia.

He will stick to main roads and lanes on the route and will cross the River Thames through the Greenwich foot tunnel before walking north towards Cambridge.

Nick, who is a goalkeeper for Beacons FC Under 18s team based in Kidbrooke, said: "I'm an avid Charlton Athletic fan - I follow them home and away.

"I wanted to do something to remember by nan who passed away in December and this seemed a good idea.

"The walk will take me three days and I'll be staying in a Premier Inn or a B&B. But I'll have to walk more than 22 miles a day.

"It's an evening kick off on Tuesday so I just hope I don't miss the match.

"I'm hoping to raise as much as I can for the charity to find a cure for this awful disease."

Nick's mum Beverley, 49, said: "We're incredibly proud of Nick. He wanted to do something to remember his Nan and help the fight against dementia and he came up with this idea."

Nick, who hopes to raise £1,000 has already raised more than £800.
