Two lanes have been forced to close at Dartford Crossing this afternoon due to strong winds.

Two out of four lanes are closed on the A282 southbound on QEII Bridge at Dartford Crossing.

This is as a "safety measure" while Highways England monitor wind speeds in the area.

There is currently around 10 miles of congestion on approach - all the way back to Junction 28.

This is causing delays of more than 90 minutes onto usual journey times.

Highways England has advised road users to expect disruption and allow extra journey time.

The first Highways England statement, which was first issued at around 1.45pm, said: "2 lanes (of 4) are closed on the A282 southbound QEII Bridge at Dartford Crossing due to strong winds recorded in the area.

"These leeward lanes have been implemented as a safety measure whilst we continually monitor the wind speeds in the area.

"There is currently approx. 7.5 miles of congestion on approach, back to J29.

"This is causing delays of over 60 minutes onto usual journey times.

"Road users are advised to expect disruption and to allow extra journey time.

"Further incident information is available on our www.trafficengland.com website.

"For urgent real-time assistance, our 24/7 contact centre team can provide up to the minute information on 0300 123 5000."

Information was updated at around 4pm to say: "Delays due to the lane closures on the #QEIIBridge at the #DartfordCrossing are now at 90 minutes above normal journey times and there is approximately 10 miles of very heavy congestion from J28 of the #M25.

"Please consider alternate routes if possible."
