Pupils from a specialist school in Greenwich have collected donations from the community to send to those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

More than 1,300 essential items have been sent to Poland by the key stage four class at Charlton Park Academy after their two-day campaign on March 14 and 15.

Every morning the students watch Newsround, and they became concerned after seeing the conflict day after day.

They asked their teacher how they could actively help and saw quite a few donations teams were organising around London.

Berenger Allee, 38, the teacher of the class, told the News Shopper: “It started as an idea and then it just snowballed.

"It’s just like a lesson, if the students are engaged then it’s going to be successful.”

The students told Mr Allee that it felt nice to put others first and that they hope the Ukrainian people get through this difficult time.

The class wrote a letter to parents, staff, carers, and the wider school community to ask for donations of essentials.

The students packed separate boxes of medicines, emergency kits, baby products, long-shelf-life food, gloves, hand sanitiser, sanitary products as well as toys and books for the children.

Berenger dropped the car full of supplies off at the White Eagle Polish Club in Balham.

“As I arrived, they were loading a truck that was leaving within the hour for Poland and because the kids had organised it so well and the boxes were labelled, they took all of our stuff into the truck and so it should be arriving tonight in Poland,” he explained.

He said the class plan to do this again before the end of term and are hoping to donate wheelchairs on the next round.

Berenger said: “The overwhelming feeling was that the news can be really dark, and it is quite important to see the positive side where people get together in these dark moments.”

“I shared a video to the class of the White Eagle that Downing Street did as well as the pictures when I dropped everything off, so they see where their work went.

News Shopper:

“They can see that they are not alone and not the only people taking part, it’s a lot of people in England and across Europe that are trying to support the poor people of Ukraine.

“We just want to thank everyone for pulling together like this and it just shows that the school community is very strong.”

Charlton Park Academy is a specialist school in Greenwich for students with complex, low incidence special educational needs who might struggle in traditional education.
