A regular boat service running into central London from Gravesend could be launched, after the council agreed to sell Town Pier, according to reports.

Councillors have reached an agreement with Uber Boats, run by Thames Clippers, to sell Gravesend Town Pier, ITV report.

The ferry provider is expected to extend its service, which currently stops at 23 piers along the Thames between Woolwich (Royal Arsenal) Pier in the East and Putney Pier in the West.

A temporary Saturday service from Gravesend Town Pier was offered in August 2021, at a price of £11 per person for a single adult journey, or £19.50 for an adult return journey.

According to ITV, as a condition of the deal, which is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry will continue to run and the public will still have access to the pier.

Town Pier, the oldest cast iron pier in the world, was bought by the council in 2000 and reopened to the public in 2009 following restoration.

The council has reportedly spent around half a million pounds on maintenance.
