Two police officers have been taken to hospital after a "struggle" to detain a man following an assault in Beckenham.

Police were called to a house in Foxgrove Road on Tuesday at around 3.35pm after reports of a man and woman having been assaulted.

Officers tried to detain the suspect but became involved in a "struggle" before using a taser.

Two injured police officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

They have since been discharged.

A man, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of assault.

He was also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during the arrest.

He has now been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

The man and woman at the scene were not seriously injured, and declined the police’s offer to call an ambulance.

Enquiries into the circumstances continue, according to police.

The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at approximately 15:35hrs on Tuesday, 23 November to reports of a man and woman assaulted at an address in Foxgrove Road, Beckenham.

"Officers attended and attempted to detain the suspect. A struggle ensued and Taser was discharged.

"A man, believed aged in his 20s, was arrested on suspicion of assault; he was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries sustained during his arrest.

"He has now been sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

"Two police officers have also attended hospital for treatment to injuries.

"Both have since been discharged.

"The man and woman at the scene were not seriously injured, and declined the police’s offer to call an ambulance.

"Enquiries into the circumstances continue.

"The Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed."
