Police do not believe the cause of a Bexleyheath house fire in which two women, a boy and a girl died, was suspicious.

The victims were pulled from the first floor a semi-detached terraced house on Hamilton Road, shortly after 8.30pm on Thursday, November 18, but died at the scene.

The children are “believed to be an infant boy and girl”, according to police. Police also believe the deceased were related to each other.

A man who escaped the fire was taken to hospital, where he remains with injuries to his legs. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

Another person was taken to hospital by ambulance "after he arrived at the scene", police said.

At this stage, the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious and there have been no arrests.

The victims' next of kin have been informed.

Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, head of policing for Bexley, Lewisham and Greenwich said: "Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased, who have suffered such an awful and devastating loss.

"We have officers in the location and I know these sentiments are shared by residents across the Bexley and London as a whole.

"Our inquiries are ongoing and we will continue to work with our colleagues in the London Fire Brigade to fully understand the cause of this terrible incident.

"In these very early stages we don't believe the cause of the fire is suspicious."

Around 40 firefighters and six fire engines rushed to the blaze on Hamilton Road.

James Morford, Bexley borough commander for LFB, has been speaking at the scene.

He said: "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of those people.

"My firefighters worked incredibly hard.

"The fire was dealt with relatively quickly. They practised all the right on-arrival tactics. Everything that was fed back to me was correct.

"Unfortunately the outcome was not the outcome they wanted.

"I came down to visit them last night and they were devastated.

"They were professional, they tried their best, but unfortunately the fire got to the people before we could."
