A man from Lewisham has been sent to prison after a number of theft offences from supermarket giants.

William Kpato admitted to thieving a backpack, angle grinder and jacket totalling £43.97 from an Aldi store in Catford on October 10, 2020.

He also admitted to burgling a Tesco store in Lewisham Road, Ladywell by trespassing and stealing £91.50 worth of alcohol on July 12, 2020 while on bail for a previous offence.

The 56-year-old, of Brockley Rise in Crofton Park, was jailed for 18 weeks during a hearing at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on August 2, 2021.

The imprisonment was a consecutive sentence of four weeks for the Aldi incident and 14 weeks for the Tesco incident.

On November 10, 2020, Kpato was also detained for refusing to provide a sample for a Class A drugs test.

On July 30, 2021, Kpato failed to comply with a community protection notice that had been issued and entered a Marks & Spencer’s store in Lee High Road which he was banned from entering.

He was not given a separate penalty for either of these offences.

Kpato was also sentenced to 18 weeks in prison for assaulting a man at a Tesco Express store in SE12 on May 26, 2021 - for which he denied but was found guilty for.

He was not ordered to pay costs for this offence “due to lack of means”.
